Safeguarding/Member Volunteer

Hi, I'm Karen Buck,

I was diagnosed with epilepsy when I was 12 years old. I am now 46 years old I have 4 beautiful children, all harmed by Sodium Valproate from Mild to Profound.

Over the years I have been prescribed many anti-epileptic drugs. My medication changed to Sodium Valproate, I became pregnant on a dose of 800mg. Due to being unwell whilst pregnant my dose was then increased to a massive dose of 3400mg, by the end of my pregnancy.

Although I love and care for all my children, Bridget my 3rd Child lights up my life with her smile, despite the Profound Harm Sodium Valproate has impacted her life.

Bridget can and does bring a smile to everyone’s face, no matter how ill she may be.

Although Bridget has the mind of a 2-year old child she can and does make everyone smile, loves blowing kisses, clapping her hands and watching “Mr Tumble” she will forever be my little angel.

Bring up 4 Children impacted by Sodium Valproate has been very challenging, in 2012 my whole world nearly fell apart, when I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer.  If it wasn’t for my Children pulling me through giving me light at the end of all the treatment I don’t think I would have got through it.  Seeing the smile on Bridget’s face every day gave me strength.

Now I have a New Chapter in my life having the all clear of cancer, I have a new family in my life OACS.  It’s my goal to work with all the members and trustee, to move OACS forward into all the communities giving help and support to all the families.
